Why all the fuss about chia seeds?

Chia seeds come from salvia hispanica, a herb belonging to the mint family and indigenous to Mexico and Guatemala. The Mexican state of Chiapas where Arjuna's excellent Zapitista Coffee also originates:) derives it's name from the chia seed which has been cultivated since the Aztec period.

So why all the fuss?

Chia seeds are a superfood, rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and containing more fibre than flax seed. A complete source of protein, just one ounce (or 28g) contains 18% of your recommended daily intake of calcium, 27% of phosphorus, and 30% manganese.  They are packed full of antioxidants, and have a slightly nutty flavour.

So how do you eat chia seeds?

Chia seeds can be mixed in with couscous, sprinkled over salad, added to a muffin mix, ground and stirred into youghurt, or sprinkled on your favourite Arjuna muesli! We also sell delicious flapjacks with chia seeds and coconut oil.

As the weather warms up, you could also try making a refreshing Agua fresca de chia! An energising drink made by stirring the milled seeds with water, lime juice and sugar.

Beetroot bread

As well as our ever popular kalamata olive bread...today we have beetroot bread!
